I am writing a paper and I feel as if I need a more formal way of writing 'doesn't work'. Any thoughts? Thanks :)

The best thing to do is to create a Procedure header style first, then select all Heading 4 text and change it to be the Procedure header style.

It depends on the context. You can say 'out of order, inoperable, etc.' for some contexts. If it is an attempt to solve a problem which didn't work out or an experiment for which the outcome didn't work out as expected, you can say, 'The experiment did not work out as expected,' and then give required information about the experiment.

'Inoperable'?
I suppose it depends on what/who doesn't work.
